You might think a city of the prominence of England’s capital, would have a moniker more glamorous than Big Smoke.

You would be wrong.

Apparently Big Smoke refers to the ocean of air pollution that billowed into London’s skies, as workers flocked to the capital in search of work during the United Kingdom’s industrialization in the 1800’s into the 1900’s.

But make no mistake, London in many ways is the center of the world. In the age of exploration, Britain alone planted democracy in many corners of the world. Leave everything behind and just be away from the noise of the city? The noise of machines? The noise of you? Then I have the perfect place.
Sort of like a treasure hunt, but you’ll find your paradise atop Michigan’s lower peninsula. Just east of the Mackinac Island Bridge that connects Michigan’s upper and lower peninsula’s is Mackinac Island, located at 45°51′40″N84°37′50″W. The name, Mackinac, is derived from the native Ojibwe word mishimikinaak, or big turtle.
Originally colonized by the French, the British took possession of the island after the French and Indian War of the mid-1760’s. Mackinac bounced from British to American control before the United States eventually assumed dominion of the Great Lakes after the War of 1812.
After the Civil War, Americans increasingly had time to travel and take vacations. Mackinac Island National Park became the second U.S. National Park, after Yellowstone, in 1875. Soon tourists began to look to visit. But there were few places to stay.
In 1886, a number of the major mid-western railroads purchased land on Mackinac and set about constructing the Grand Hotel.

The Grand Hotel

Opened in 1887, the Grand remains one of the last vestiges of America’s gilded age, that amazing growth period of prosperity and power from the end of the Civil War to the early 1900’s. The Jewel consists of two nine-hole tracts. The Grand nine, designed by noted golf architect Tom Bendelow, opened in 1901. Its name derives from its location adjacent to the Grand Hotel. The second nine, the Woods, opened in 1994, lies inland. A unique Mackinac experience is playing the Grand nine and then you and your clubs, being ferried by horse drawn carriage to complete your round at the Woods. On both courses, you’ll find exquisite, lush landscaping and spectacular views.

Mackinac’s other course is the charming Wawashkamo club. To play Wawa as the locals call it, you’ll need to step back to the earliest days of golf. Designed by architect Alex Smith, winner of the U.S. Open in 1906 and 1910, it evokes images of his hometown of Carnoustie in Scotland.

Of all the places I’ve been blessed to visit, few can match the charm and tranquility of Mackinac Island. To bring forth a new nation, committed to affording its citizens an opportunity to forge a better life—safeguarded through the creation of laws to nurture, guide, and protect it.

Each state is allowed two and as you can imagine, this occasionally leads to heated debate over who and who should not be so honored.

While you can tour most of the Capitol, the dome is not open to the public. Which is probably not a bad thing as there are 365 steps, representing the number of days in a year, from the basement to the top. That would be a good workout.

Across the ceiling, and through the oculus or eye of the massive dome, one can find the famous painting entitled The Apotheosis of Washington. If you were inclined, you can walk all the way from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, but be prepared. It’s a distance of one-point-nine miles. And be prepared to stop. I mean a lot.

Like Mid-Town Manhattan, many of the DC things in movies, TV shows, books and magazines, are situated on the Mall.

The Mall is bounded on the North by Madison Drive, on the South by Jefferson Drive. Leaving the Capitol for the Lincoln Memorial, along Madison you’d pass both buildings containing the National Gallery of Art, check out the time based media displays—very cool!

Next stop, the National Sculpture Garden, which is all outside. Watch out for the giant spider!

And if the outdoors is more your forte, you’ll love the Natural History Museum, the largest collection of natural specimens in the world. When people speak of New York, the often are referring to Manhattan. An island, it’s bounded by the Harlem River to the north, in the east by the East River, on the west by the Hudson River and the Upper Hudson Bay to the south.

Manhattan is the home to many amazing and impactful organizations and buildings. You often hear of New Yorkers referring to ‘uptown’ and ‘downtown’. Downtown is famous for Wall Street and Battery Park, while Uptown is home to things like Columbia University on the Upper West Side. But for today, I want to touch on Midtown Manhattan.

According to Wikipedia, it is this country’s largest commercial, entertainment and media center as well as home to some of the most expensive retail real estate on the planet. On Fifth Avenue alone, rents can be as high as $3,000 per square foot. It is home to two of America’s four major TV networks, CBS and NBC.

While the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade starts up by Central Park, it winds through and finishes at Macy’s Midtown flagship store. From Times Square, you’re a short walk, less than half a mile, to Rockefeller Center. On the way you’ll pass Hershey’s Chocolate World, the Ninetendo Store, NBC Studio 1A where they film the Today Show and FAO Schwarz Toy store, made famous in the movie Big. The building’s design, art, sculptures, statues and color, are massively dominated by Art Deco, an extremely popular style of the early twentieth century.

Two examples of this are the statue of Atlas holding the world at the eastern side of the Rock Center, across Fifth Avenue from St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
Come and meet the Bears! Gurdi and Mortimer Bear live in Ursaville. He manages Pops, a small diner that’s been in the family since forever. Mortimer literally dreams of bacon sizzling in maple syrup on the grill. It reminds him of his childhood, when his grandfather, Ezra Bear ran the diner. Many times Mortimer would stop in, on his way to school, down at Riverthumb. He’d find Ezra grilling up breakfast for customers.

A biscuit, sopped up with bacon grease, stuffed with bacon, eggs, cheese and shallots, lovingly wrapped in tin foil, greeted Mortimer every morning. Gramps would give him a hug and fifty cents for a milk and away he went. After stopping at Dairy Joe’s to buy an ice cold milk, came the best part.

Mortimer had a secret spot in the woods, just above Futurebright elementary school, from where he could watch the Zig Zag River below. It was an odd name for sure, probably came from the unhurried way it just drifted to and fro on its way to wherever. Carefully opening, first his tinfoil treasure and then the milk, Mortimer would drink in an aroma so rich and thick, ‘You could almost eat it’, Mortimer would think.

There on his redoubt, he’d savor his little breakfast, trying to make it last as loooong as possible, while letting the Zig Zag carry his imagination away to exotic destinations and adventures.

Indeed, he was imagining such a morning as he fired up the grill in preparation for another bustling day. Just then, the door opened and his oldest daughter, Honeystar entered. At thirteen, she was the spitting image of Gurdi.

Opening the door to nickel-chrome commercial fridge, Mortimer removed a glass of freshly pressed OJ and put it down before her. Ever in a hurry to get to her future, Honeystar still always gazed at the menu as if this one decision would change her destiny.

“Thanks Dad,” she idly said. “Yogurt and fresh fruit or a white egg omelet with mozzarella cheese and shallots with a dry English muffin.” What to have she thought?

What should Honeystar have for breakfast? Write me at jack@jackbethel.com and tell me what you think? Maybe it’s a little of both. In ancient China, the great military tactician and theorist Sun Tzu’s grand treatise The Art of War, included a chapter devoted to the importance of intelligence. He wrote:

“What enables the wise sovereign and the good general to strike and conquer,

and achieve things beyond the reach of ordinary men, is foreknowledge.”

An earlier blog, The Return of the Cold War Spy Thriller, highlighted the perception between observation and actual espionage. The craft of spying has existed since the dawn of warfare and empire building.

Many historians credit Francis Walsingham with establishing some of the spy-craft techniques common to espionage. Working for Queen Elizabeth I, he developed things like cryptography, code breaking, and general intelligence gathering from across Europe.

Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, most European powers were developing ways to keep tabs on their neighbors. Industrial espionage became necessary as no country wanted to be surprised by a potential enemy’s new weapon system or military advantage.

In the American Revolution, George Washington was keenly aware of the invaluable aid that good intelligence could render. But using single spies was time consuming, inefficient, and dangerous. Washington learned this after the loss of Nathan Hale, who was executed by the British for espionage early in the war. Washington recognized he needed a network.

Washington found the answer in one of Hale’s college classmates: Benjamin Tallmadge. Tallmadge had an extensive network of contacts in New York, Connecticut, and Long Island. He was instrumental in creating the Culper Gang, named in part after Culpeper County in Virginia where Washington had served as a surveyor early in life.

The Gang operated mostly on Long Island and Connecticut, and was tasked with monitoring the activities of the British Army. Key operatives included Robert Townsend — who operated in plain sight as a British loyalist — and Anna Smith Strong, a New York woman.

Townsend sent coded messages in invisible ink to Austin Roe, a tavern owner in Strong's town. Roe passed the notes to Abraham Woodall, who arranged to leave them at prearranged sites. But it was Strong, whose simple, but highly effective, system of hanging laundry in a certain order, indicated to Talmadge, where to pick up the message. The art of spying! This helped to keep the Continental Army informed of British troop and ship movements as well as other information.

The beauty of dormant moles is that often they are native to the country being undermined, and will fit in with little or no fear of detection.
History is replete with attempts to brainwash people—by various intelligence gathering organizations such as the CIA, MI6, or secret police organizations like the East German Stasi, the Chinese and North Korean Ministries of State Security—with the intent of controlling or causing the victim to inflict damage on another person or country. The concept of brainwashing falls into a category referred to as thought control by psychologists. Methods might include efforts to change the way someone thinks, induce certain behaviors, or in the realm of fiction, make someone do something (usually bad) at a certain time, place, or to someone when the person’s programming is activated.

For the most part, brainwashing has been a dead end. Many scientists, psychiatrists, and psychologists believe the human mind cannot be programmed to do things that run counter to their instinctual value system of right and wrong. Where it does have some impact is through isolating and bombarding someone with a constant stream of propaganda about how bad someone or something is and convincing someone to destroy it. ISIS has been very successful at radicalizing Islamic adherents—usually young, with little to no life experience to counter the propaganda—to commit acts of jihad against others that disagree with their belief system.

Nonetheless, the idea of manipulating others to do one’s will, while remaining anonymous, will continue to be a source of fascination, for scientists and writers alike.

Retrospection for things accomplished. Anticipation of things to come, both bad and good. This post is not designed to feel sorry or overly introspective. Maybe just to give vent and recognize that it is totally normal to occasionally pause and consider. But sometimes you can’t help but feel a sense of being alone like Gloria Swanson in the movie Sunset Boulevard.

In the movie, set in mid-century Hollywood, Swanson plays fading movie star Norma Desmond. Desmond, who was once a leading lady and beauty of the silent age of movies, is no longer offered plum roles. In reality almost no roles. Filled with a sense of abandonment and isolation, Desmond now lives as a recluse in her mansion, surrounded by pictures, movie premiere posters and mementos of her glory days along with her memories, good and bad, of her best, past days. The walls of her relevance are closing in around her. But she is not alone. Indeed throughout literature, there is a constant, ever recurring theme of aging accompanied by questions of purpose and the slow intuition that one’s reason for being is an ever dwindling resource.

The quiet desperation affects us all in some way. Nature makes it easier for many, often decreasing our ambition and drive while increasing peace and contentment with each new decade. But for others it’s like being stranded on an island in the middle of life’s ocean. While the island could be a paradise, they can’t help but watch the hustle and bustle of ships, freighters, boats and planes above that represent the lives of other people, driving toward their appointed destiny and not feel a sense of being left behind.

Society today can be a very isolating place. Children increasingly grow up as latch-key kids. Teens willingly lock themselves into the jail cells of social media—rarely interacting with their flesh and blood peers. Adults find their best years sapped in the pursuit of relationships, marriage, parenting, work, accomplishment and building a successful retirement. Retirement arrives with some measure of ease but also …Norma Desmond. Didn’t Thomas Jefferson pen that famous sentence about “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”? On the website for the Campaign to End Loneliness, I found a reference to a study from 2010, where the authors, Julianne Holt-Lunstad, Timothy B. Smith and J. Bradley Layton concluded that loneliness and isolation is as damaging to our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

So what is the answer? I’m not so sure I know. Writing allows my characters to speak thoughts, take actions or make choices that might not be available to me. It gives relevance to my thoughts. Other people find their own unique way to be relevant. Gardening. Restoring a car or old building. Making furniture. Travel. Animal rescue. Taking a garbage sack and picking up litter along the side of the road closest to their home (by the way if you do this, be prepared to pick up a lot of cigarette butts). Serving on a local city board. Charity work. But my sense is that the more engaged with people we can be, the less time we have to dwell on ourselves. The past seems less invasive. The future less frightening. Focus on today …and don’t be Norma.
